Donor Profile: Andy Bryant, Chairman of Intel’s Board of Directors
Solutions that go well beyond the local
In 2008, Andy Bryant was invited to participate in a golf tournament at the world-famous Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.
While Bryant admits he came for the golf, he realized that the organization benefiting from the fundraiser – The Freshwater Trust – would be one he’d follow and support for years to come.
Bryant is the current chairman of the board of directors of Intel. He joined the company in 1981 and has served as the vice chairman, chief administrative officer and chief financial officer.
Both his background in economics and experience in a rather water intensive industry helped him appreciate the value of the resource and understand the imperative to protect it.
“I am an economist by training so I look at supply and demand,” said Bryant. “In our day to day life, it’s easy to lose track of what really matters, and water is certainly one of those things. But when you look at water and its future, you start to realize that at some point soon, we’re going to be in big trouble – unless we do something to protect this resource.”
Bryant lives in Oregon with his family and works out of Intel’s Hillsboro, Oregon, campus.
While California may be ground zero for water quantity issues in the U.S, he’s recognized the ways his home state has changed.
“When I moved here, Mt. Hood was always white,” said Bryant. “Now it’s almost completely brown. Water is one of the most important resources we have here, and I’d rather start caring for it before it becomes a crisis.”
But it’s not just California’s crisis or Oregon’s crisis. It’s bigger than that. And that’s part of why Bryant supports The Freshwater Trust.
“Most organizations don’t see beyond their own borders or their narrow mandate,” he said. “This is a big, interrelated problem, and The Freshwater Trust sees it. They are innovative, and their solutions go well beyond just the local.”
