For an environmental market system to work, landowners play a key role. Projects like tree plantings are implemented on private lands – mostly owned by farmers and ranchers. By planting trees on their land to reduce a river or stream’s temperature – an ecosystem service – landowners receive monetary compensation for helping to provide that ecosystem service. An environmental market provides a way for landowners to diversify their income and become a partner in conservation.
